There have been 3 Photographic Societies in Ipswich. The first known as Ipswich & West Moreton Amateur Photography Club established in 1893. The second club which was known as the Ipswich Amateur Photography Club, was formed, with the first meeting being held on 27th. July 1901.
An advertisement on the back page of the Queensland Times newspaper on 23rd July 1953 advised that a meeting would be held for “enthusiastic people interested in photography”. The first meeting of the present day Ipswich Photographic Society Inc. was held o the 27th July 1953 at the QPA & I meeting room, (now the Ipswich Show Society). The Queensland Times reported on the 28th July, that there was a membership of 18.
Members of the Society have participated successfully in National and International competitions with Monochrome Prints, Colour Prints and Slides and with Audio Visual presentations being introduced during the 1970’s. Over the years membership has fluctuated and at the present time there are between 45 – 50 members participating in a variety of competitions during the year. Membership is open to people of all ages and cultures. Outings to various places of interest in the district are encouraged. With the introduction of Digital Photography and the decline of film cameras the club is now entering Projected Images and needs financial aid for the purchase of appliances to enable members to learn further skills in the production of digital images.
We are a “not for profit” organisation.
The club was incorporated in February, 1991.
Meetings for the Ipswich Photographic Society are held at the Old Courthouse, Ipswich (corner of Roderick & East streets) on the second, third and fourth Tuesday night of every month, commencing at 7.00pm.
The second Tuesday night of the month is dedicated to competition / image critique where members are asked to submit photographs to be judged and critiqued by outside judges.
The third Tuesday evening is dedicated to ‘New Members’ on basic camera skills with topics such as “getting to know your camera”, composition etc.
Workshops on the fourth Tuesday night vary from guest speakers on different photography techniques, practical photography shoots and photographing in different situations.
